Role Models

by Her Excellency Michaëlle Jean

On Friday, October 26, Rideau hall hosted the 100th investiture ceremony of the Order of Canada, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. I encourage everyone to read the citations, which highlight the lives and accomplishments of the women and men who were honoured. You will discover remarkable people from every sector of society and from all across the country, people whose genius, altruism and vision have made an outstanding difference in the world. Each and every one of them is an inspiration. This Order of Canada ceremony gave us the opportunity to celebrate, for the 100th time, not an elitist ideal of the best among us, but a reflection of the very best in all of us.

But how can we cultivate this spirit of excellence, ability to excel and sense of commitment? How do we ensure that these values, knowledge and experiences are passed from generation to generation? The answer is in the responses we get on this site from young people when they talk with members of the Order of Canada. They say things like, “you’re my hero,” “you are a role model to me.” And in return, the members have told us how much they have learned from talking to young people. That is what we must encourage and perpetuate: solid and concrete ties between generations. Starting this year, we will be helping to establish mentoring relationships. I have no doubt that both the mentors and the mentored will find the experience lively and enriching. We are working to bring together young people and members of the Order of Canada. More information about this program will be posted here in the coming weeks.

After having the honour of being present at the 100th investiture today, and the opportunity to speak with some of the recipients, I now appreciate first hand what Her Excellency has been experienceing during each of these ceremonies. What a great Canada we share with such wonderful 'real people' Canadians making our Canada such 'a better country' in so many inspiring ways! I made the mistake of saying to someone: "I'm just a nobody." in reference to not being a recipient or recipient's guest. But that is so wrong. I am a very proud Canadian.

I commend the mentoring program idea and implementation. Great work!

Sounds like an amazing idea. I really like it, because not only will the 40 people directly involved be impacted, but their lessons and stories will spread to help others grow as well. It would be amazing to be involved with this!

I really like the "40 Sources of Inspiration" idea. Often the Order of Canada is perceived as elitist, without much relevance to daily life. This programme helps tremendously to remind us that the recipients are not only being recognized for their past accomplishments but for the further contributions that they can make to Canada and the World. By creating the opportunity for recipients to further connect with youth in a mentoring role, their knowledge and experience will be further amplified, and they themselves will be enriched. I look forward to future reports from the team of 40 on their dialogue and experiences.

I think it's absolutely terrific what the world of Art--the Order of Canada is doing to influence our young people in a positive encouraging way.

I predict 'Mentorship' 40 Sources of Inspiration will prove productive successful and ongoing.

Success comes from great leadership ability, and backing support. Most of us know that our Governor General Michaelle Jean fits the job beautifully.

I really like this idea as a way to encourage youth to go as far as possible

2008 will go down in history as the year the Order of Canada was devalued to a vehicle for special interest groups.I am sure that an anti-abortionist would not be allowed to be a candidate, let alone be appointed to the office. Morgantaler has been responsible for thousands of infant deaths.

Morgantaler You say.... responsible for thousands of infant deaths... on the other hand so many kids live in poverty... so many homeless... perhaps Morgantaler spared those infants of poverty etc..

and to encourage youth to go as far as possible...and backing support well then give them their child support for starters.... it belongs to them... invest in their education with it if you don't want to give it to them if by ill luck a parent is disabled..

armistice 2001 should go down in history also... one of the Royal Canadian Legions was allowing a wreath to be placed in honor of Vietnam Veterans... my fiance was a Vietnam Veteran (Canadian born) who was going to lay the wreath, with me at his side, till I was rear-ended in the back of my van on the way down there... I suffer alot of internal damages.... I was hit by a civil protection officer.. whom would not help me nor did he want anyone to know... the battle is still going on... unfortunately justice is not served yet..
