The Earthquake in Haiti

by Her Excellency Michaëlle Jean

I am following, with great attention and concern, the emerging reports regarding the earthquake that struck Haiti with force, and which was felt elsewhere in the region.

This natural disaster has hit a country with an extremely fragile infrastructure, where many buildings are already unstable, and where living conditions are often very difficult. I fear for its people.

I would like all Haitians to know that they are not alone and that the people of Canada will respond to this emergency.

Because of the background of Her Excellency, this video affected me more than any other politician's statement. I found myself moved to tears by her heartbreaking words. My prayers go out to all individuals affected by this tragedy.

My thoughts and prayers are with you as you go through these very difficult and trying moments. It is in these moments of adversity that the human spirit can shine. Find your smile and your courage, for both are needed now. I am proud of how you represent our country, I have no doubts you will guide us skillfully now. Canada is one of many that brings us together. Any place where there is pain, is ours to share together. You are not alone, nor is Haiti. Peace and vision to you!

My name is Nichole Korol. I have never written to a government official of any kind, but as I sit in my office feeling anxious and helpless for my best friend in Kelowna, BC, I feel it's all I can do to help.

Dana Smid and her husband Ryan have been going through the adoption process, for their daughter Carmelisa, in Haiti, for almost 4 years. My eyes have truly been opened at the emotions they have gone through during this seemingly endless process. They went to visit Carmelisa a month ago, and have been anxiously waiting for the call to return, to bring her home. I can't tell you how difficult it is to hear Dana right now, almost at the point of a breakdown, as she is unable to help her daughter.

Carmelisa is at GLA Orphanage, which luckily remained standing, but will soon be even more over capacity. Dana wants nothing more than to fly there right now, but has said she needs to take the proper steps first, which I admire. She has an interview with the news, and is doing everything possible, as I see many families around the world are, contacting officials etc, to get these children already in the adoptive process, out of Haiti, and to safety with their new families, immediately. You're aware of the situation, and that as the days pass, living conditions will worsen.

Mme. Jean, I'm a 'get-it-done' kind of person. As time is of the essence, there isn't time to start Facebook pages, contact the media, etc. I am hoping that you have the ability to help this situation. Right now I'm sure you are very busy with emergency assistance, but in that, might you consider including a process to have emergency visas (medical?) issued for these children that have families waiting in Canada?

It's just not right for these almost-Canadian kids to suffer through this tragedy when they have families here that love them, and just want them home. I do apologize for my frankness- it's a strange feeling being affected by a disaster in another country. I love my best friend like a sister, and I have to say that it's a really terrible feeling knowing that my baby niece is sleeping in a driveway at 50 degrees, with dirty water, little food, and improper care at the moment. I want her home, sir. Please.

Sincerely,

Nichole Korol

Your Excellency, My heart is feeling pain like never before. I am too shocked for words. I pray the Lord gives everyone of us the fortitude to bear the losses of friends, dear, loved and family ones in Haiti.

Your Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean my prayers, my love and my thoughts are with you and the people of Haiti. Haiti and Jamaica are close neighbours, so this means more to me. I felt the aftershocks here too in Jamaica, which measured 5.5 and 5.9!

I was deeply moved to tears viewing the video of your speech which a friend just shared with me. Prior to viewing your video, I had also just seen a live report on CNN of an eleven year old girl trapped in the rubble, screaming, saying she is scared and the only possible hope for her life to be saved is for them to remove her leg....I am praying that her leg be freed and somehow that they will be able to get her out of there. Then there is also a fifteen day old infant..I am at a loss for words...I am very deeply moved...knowing too, this is a few of many...such a catastrophe....

Again, my prayers, my thoughts, my love are with you and the people of Haiti.

Love,

Your Excellency, the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean please accept my sincere condolences at this time of immense tragedy. Please know that you are not alone and that your words were heard and acted upon by many. Kind thoughts and prayers are with you.
We pray for those who have family and friends in Haiti and the surrounding area, O Lord, and for those who died in this recent disaster; may their souls rest in peace and their loved ones be comforted. We pray for the survivors, that they may experience Your healing in their spirits, their bodies and their communities. As they gather to mourn their loved ones we pray that they stay together in solidarity; affirming your grace in each of us, rebuilding their community together. We give thanks for those who have given of themselves to assist in searching for loved ones, assisting survivors and providing spiritual, personal, material, and financial assistance in this time of emergency. We pray for this community and our larger, global community that we may ever have compassion and caring for our brothers and sisters. Thank you Heavenly Father for this day and for the gifts received. Blessings...

Your Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, My heart is breaking too. All of our thoughts and Prayer are with the People of Haiti. I am the Mother of 4, twins adopted from Haiti and thier biological baby sister who is still stuck in Haiti tonight. Thier Mother passed away and we are in the process of adopting Fabie. We have word tonight She is safe tonight. I was the Co-Chair for Ontario 1 at the Governor General's Canadian Leadership Conference 2008. We spoke of our children. Our Paperwork is complete in Canada but we fear it is now under rubble in Port-au-Prince. We humbly ask Your Excellency for your thoughts on how to reunite our family. We know first hand how great the need will be on the Orphanges in Haiti.

Port-au-Prince was wonderful, sad, vibrant, magic city. I love that city like I love Vancouver, Montreal or Toronto, the people who live in that city are so proud so strong. We were in Haiti Feb 2004, we needed help to get out of a dangerous situation and the people Port-au-Prince helped us so much. We are doing everything we can to help them now.

Yours Sincerely

Votre Excellence,

Your Excellency, the Right Honorable Michaëlle Jean,

Beautiful heartfelt speech. Please help us. We are trying to find information on Menez Pierre-Pierre who owns Le Marcelin located at 29 Marcelin Avenue in Port-Au-Prince. We have reached out to DFAIT but we have heard nothing yet just that it is recorded that we are seeking information. Menez lives here in Ottawa with his family and goes to Haiti frequently. He was there at the time of the quake. He is a doctor so perhaps he is helping out at the Embassy...please see if you can find out anything on his whereabouts or send someone down to Le Marcelin to see what the status is. We thank-you for your help. We just want a sign.

Your Excellency, Michaelle Jean,
My name is Adriana Crugnale, a former canadian resident now living in Perugia, Italy where I had the honour and pleasure of meeting you personally during the first Alumni Reunion at l'Università per Stranieri in July 2006.
From the very moment I learned of the horrific catastrophe which struck your people in Haiti my thoughts went out to you and all the Haitian community who are now totally devastated and suffering so.
As you may already know my country, Italy, has already sent men to offer their help and many associations here are raising funds to further support aid programs. Surely the generosity of we Italians will contribute in every possible way so that your people will not feel alone in their desperation.
My heart is feeling tremendous pain as I continue to see all the destruction and death caused by such a terrible tragedy in a country already so tried by continuous misfortune.
My prayers, my love and my thoughts are with you and the people of Haiti.
With heartfelt solidarity
Sincerely

Your Excellency,

I am so grateful to you that you are taking leadership on relief for the people of Haiti. This is a horrific catastrophe in which all Canadians send their condolonces. I appreciate your authenticity and your determination to offer help as soon as possible.

I am serving as student government president at a large college and we would like to support relief aid to Haiti and if you or a member of your staff could contact me, we'll be sure to respond quickly.

I hope your Excellency gets to go to Haiti soon to see the damage that was caused to make a better assesment of what still needs to be done.

We will all be observing the development closely.

I am a carpenter and I was wondering how I could offer my skills as a builder and actually go to Haiti to help rebuild. I want to do more than just donate money. I am available during York University's reading week from February 13th to 21st.

What organizations can help me volunteer in Haiti? I have no money to afford a plane ticket either, so I understand that may hinder my ability to go to Haiti.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Mme Michaëlle Jean,

SVP!

WE are very saddened by this disastrous earthquake which has robbed so many lives. We extend our sadness to all people relatives and friends who have felt this agony from the bottom of our hearts. However, we must press forward and learn from this that no part of this earth is invincible to mother nature's destruction. I was borned just south in Trinidad and I felt many tremors and hurricanes. I left Trinidad in 1972 and was challenged by the very thought of the dangers of living in the Caribbean. Over the past 35 years, we have worked to developed various affordable technologies for constructing earthquake/ hurricane structures and know that we can solve this problem in Hati by simply transferring this technology and putting the able Hatians to work to build the new communities and live in safe housing while getting their lives together. WE need all support to assist Hati with this rebuilding programme which is desperately needed.

Thank You

Votre Excellence,

2.- Nourriture (Riz - Petits pois - Mais - Sardines - Harreng)

4.- Petites lampes a batteries recharge (energie solaire)

Edouard

Comment faire pour l'aider ?

Your Excellency, The Right Honourable, Michaelle Jean,

As the Governor-General for Canada and being a native of Haiti, being raised in Port-au-Prince, I can empathize with how you must be feeling watching this overwhelming tragedy unfold.

I've been listening to CNN and following the story of a group of missionaries from Idaho, who as soon as the devastating earthquake hit Haiti, went there and tried to take 33 orphans, without proper documentation and authority from both the Haitian government and the Dominican Republic authorities, to a no-longer used hotel or some facility and turn it into an orphanage. Now I read on CNN, they've been charged with chlld trafficking and potential criminal intent. The leader of the group, has something of a 'rap' sheet herself despite the church in Idaho, claiming she and the others, went with honourable intent. That being said, despite being WARNED by Haitian authorities, she still chose to ignore them and continued on her way and now she and four other women and five men are all being held in a penitentiary-type facility.

I'm SO happy for all those children who literally became orphans due to the earthquake, and are now with their adoptive families from different countries. I know you have a daughter, Your Excellency, so this orphan situation must tear you apart, emotionally.
My thoughts are with you.

To digress, I don't understand why another poster on your blog would claim that you don't care about Canada or Canadians. That's not even worth dignifying. I do remember listening to you on A-News, our t.v. station for Barrie in southern Ontario, thanking Canadians for their generosity and that Canadians have donated more than any other country, to help Haitians try to recover and eventually, rebuild.

I wanted to donate to the animals in Haiti but learned from t.v. that veterinarians make livestock their top priority, which I can understand and then...cats and dogs. There are animal advocacy groups now in Haiti, trying to give domestic animals, not considered that important, some much-needed help.

Sincerely,

Ms. Carol Harrison
