The Mistress of Nothing - Fiction

by Kate Pullinger

Winning the GG means a huge amount to me.  This is an award that comes with a distinguished lineage; I am honoured and a little awe-struck to find myself included in this list.  Enormous thanks and gratitude to the Canada Council for sponsoring this prestigious award; I really am thrilled to be this year’s winner.

The Mistress of Nothing is my eighth book.  Over the years, publishing me hasn’t been easy. These days it can be tough for books to find their way in the world.  Writers whose books don’t roar up the bestseller lists have a hard time.  Despite this, McArthur & Co, an independent Canadian publisher, no less, has kept the faith with me and my books. This award is for more than The Mistress of Nothing; it’s recognition for my publisher Kim as well. It means I can pay back some of the both literal and metaphorical debt I feel that I owe.

If you’re a reader, you’re living through a golden age; from libraries to cellphone applications, books are more readily available than ever before.  If you’re a publisher, you need to be optimistic about the future, to believe that good writing will find its way.  Digital platforms offer us a world of opportunity for finding new ways to tell stories – it’s time for us all to step up and innovate.

If you are a writer out there struggling to break through, take heart.  Look at me, an overnight sensation a mere twenty years late!

Hi Kate Pullinger

Your writing is like a breath of fresh air, it flows along nicely bringing the reader into wanting more. Your experience in writing is evident.

Because of this opportunity to learn of new people on our Governor General's forum through reading their posts, I have come to learn of you as an author, in which I shall look further into your books. I appreciate good writing, therefore your books are next on my agenda!

I wrote a book and titled it The Contemplations of Foresta Gump, after working three years on this trilogy of poetry/short stories/and The Contemplations of Foresta Gump only to lose it to Lulu.com.

Thank you Kate, for taking the time to post, may your words continue to benefit the readers.
