Bella's Tree, text by Janet Russell - Children's Literature - Illustration

by Jirina Marton

When my daughter was about ten years old she introduced me to some of her classmates, “This is my Mom. She’s fifty years old, with the brain of a five year old.”

For a moment I hesitated. How should I take it…

I took it as a compliment. Yes, she’d got it; I am connected to my childhood, indeed I never left it. There is a child in me, a child seeing and understending things her own way.
And even though I’m now far away from “fifty years old” this “brain of five years old“ is still with me. Without it my illustrations would not be the same.

Thank you, Janet Russell, for little Bella, without you she would not exist. Thanks to everybody at Groundwood Books and especially to Patricia Aldana, Michael Solomon, and Nan Froman. Without you all our Bella would not be “si belle.”

Thanks to the members of the Jury for their hard work and to all those involved with the Governor General’s Literary Award.
